To transform fabrics used for curtains and upholstery into something tangible. Our shop's creation of Nishijin-ori cushions is an extension of this idea.
What is Nishijin-ori?
It is a representative Japanese figured weave that has been handed down in Nishijin, Kyoto. It is said that the name "Nishijin" originated after the Onin War (1467-77) when artisans gathered at the site of the Western Army's camp and resumed weaving, and techniques have been refined for approximately 550 years. The intricate figured weaving, which incorporates gold and silver threads and foils, is considered the pinnacle of silk weaving.
Originally, it was a fabric for obis and Noh costumes, and there are very few opportunities to touch it in daily life. Our shop procures this fabric and sews it in Japan to make cushions. Not as a framed work of art, but as something to be placed on a sofa and touched every day.
Patterns Available
Genji-e: A pictorial representation featuring famous Kyoto landmarks from The Tale of Genji (Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji, Nijo Castle, dry landscape gardens) and Goshoguruma (court carriages), arranged with courtly patterns.
Kiba Musha Emaki (Mounted Warrior Scroll): A vibrant and dynamic piece with a general on a white horse at its center. The lining uses slubby love nep yarn, graphically expressing the auspicious tortoise shell pattern.
Tsurukame Tatewaku Mon'yo (Crane and Tortoise Rising Steam Pattern): A classical pattern combining cranes and tortoises, symbolizing longevity, with the tatewaku pattern which represents rising steam.
Fujin Raijin-zu (Wind God and Thunder God): A woven representation of the imagery known from Tawaraya Sotatsu's folding screens.
Heian Goshoguruma, Kusabana Mon'yo, Saganozakura: All are designs originating from Kyoto.
About Sizes and Inserts
In addition to 45x45cm squares, we offer elongated sizes suitable for lumbar support on sofas (such as 60x30cm, 65x35cm, 72x32cm).
Products marked "with insert" include an insert (cushion filler). For cover-only products, you can choose whether or not to include an insert on the product page. Our inserts are labeled according to the cover size, such as "for 45x45cm cover." If you choose the same indicated size as your cover, it will result in a plump finish, even at the corners.
Care Instructions
Because gold and silver threads are used, please avoid washing at home. If it gets dirty, dry cleaning is recommended. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause discoloration.
